FaithWorks

A consortium of Newton County's churches created FaithWorks in August of 2005 after a series of meetings. Churches and other existing ministries to the needy were involved in those discussions. At those meetings, it was agreed that the growing numbers of Newton County families needing emergency financial aid for rent and utility bills was posing a critical challenge to the community.

Six churches signed on initially as sponsors of the new ministry, but today there are thirty eight sponsoring churches, each of whose senior pastor and an appointed lay representative sit on the Board of Directors that meets three times yearly. On a daily basis, operations are overseen by a part-time paid Executive Director, Dennis Cheek, and an eleven member Executive Committee meets monthly to set policy and goals and to review activities.

There is no higher or better pattern for extending aid to the financially or spiritually broken in our midst than the life and teachings of Jesus Christ Himself whose ministry began among the disenfranchised, reviled and unempowered of those times. "The poor you will always have with you," He said. That is true and remains true despite the best efforts of countless loving and caring individuals and charities. In the Book of James, Verse 2:26, we read, "… so faith apart from works is dead.", and therein we at FaithWorks accept our charge. The verse inspired the name adopted by sponsoring churches at our inception.

Family Promise April Report

GREETINGS !

I apologize for being so slow to communicate about our upcoming Family Promise host week -- starting EASTER SUNDAY! All of our families who were with us in February have moved into sustainable housing and the families who will most likely be with us include: --MARCHAIL KNOX and her son JARQUEZ (11 years) - she may get a job at a temp agency doing data entry. --KAWANNA CHANDLER and her 13-year old daughter BENAHIA (BB) have been a part of the Rockdale community for a number of years. BB is active in 4-H and at the Boys and Girl's Club. --GLORIA COOPER and 3 of her 4 children entered into our program. Gloria, a longtime Conyers resident, may start working at WalMart. Her 16-year old daughter, Carolyn, has decided to live with friends while the family is in the network. ZIEDA is 12 years old and in the 7th grade at Conyers Middle School. She is a sweet girl who made fast friends with BB. KARISH is in kindergarten at CJ Hicks. KRISTIAN attends the Head Start program and is 4. A possible 4th family that is being considered is a mom and 2 kids (boy-9 & girl-17) that are currently residing in their car -- will keep you posted as to whether or not they join us in the program. There are many changes since our last host week. The “host book” is a new feature that will travel with the bus each day. It has pertinent information to help the congregation and FPNR staff communicate during the week. Volunteers are encouraged to write comments in the section toward the end of the book. The families are now required to let us know their weekend plans by Wednesday night and they’ve been told that they can't change their minds at the last minute. At least two of the families do not have transportation, so they will be dependent on the bus. None of the guests have any food allergies. Also, 16 new rollaway beds are on order and should be here the 3rd. There are two extra new beds to entice overnight volunteers to sign up! When I hear about families living in their cars, I’m reminded how important this ministry is. We hear about tornados and disasters hitting all over the U.S. and I am proud that if we are ever in a position to mobilize and provide housing for others, our experience with Family Promise will make us ready. Please tell your friends in the community about Family Promise. Looking at the old schedule, I’m hoping that once again we can fill in the blanks. I am ready to sign you up!…thank you so much,

Anna
